Training

The club is proud to be an RYA certified training centre with qualified and experienced instructors. Courses are available to members only and run throughout the season from April to October. Course availability depends on demand and the availability of the volunteer training team.

Application to attend any of the courses should be made on the training notice board in the clubhouse.

Adult Sailing Camp

This residential course is open to members of any ability from beginners to club racers. Its perfect for:

  • New members who have just started sailing and wish to become more competent in handling their dinghy.
  • Regular club racers who wish to advance their racing skills.

Small groups work with the club instructors to improve their skills using either their own boats or any of the training boats available.

Camp members take it in turns to provide group evening meals, but otherwise campers are self sufficient in terms of breakfast and lunch.

The camp provides an excellent opportunity for attendess to get know each other better and fully integrate into club social life.

On the Sunday morning immediately after the camp the club holds the Rear Commodore's Cup for Novices which attendees are encouraged to enter.

Junior Sailing Camp (Aged 8 - 15)

This residential course is open to junior members, aged between 8 and 15, of any ability from beginners to racers. Attendees will work to complete RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stages 1 to 4 over several the years.

Small groups, organised by age and skill level, work with club instructors in accordance with the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme curriculum. As much time as possible is spent on the water and a strong emphasis is put on having fun.

Campers are expected to be involved in all aspects of camp life including looking after their boats, sleeping in tents, helping with the washing up, cleaning up after meals and evening entertainment activities.

At least one parent must accompany their children at the camp and is responsible for their welfare when they are off the water. Parents are also expected to help in the running the camp with cooking, cleaning and shore safety duties.

On the Saturday morning immediately after the camp the club holds the Commodore's Cup for Cadets which attendees are encouraged to enter.

Powerboat Level 1 and 2

This course is only offered when there is sufficient demand. The course covers all aspects of driving the club's rescue boats including coming alongside, picking up the rescue boat off the mooring and all aspects of safe boat control. People who achieve this certificate are expected to help with rescue duties during club events or at the weekends.

Safety Boat

This course is offered when there is suitable demand and participants are required to hold at least a powerboat level 2 certificate. This course includes towing safely and recovering capsized and stranded boats. The course is of great benefit to members regularly involved in rescue and safety at the club.

First Aid

First Aid certificate courses are offered as necessary and follow the RYA recognised first aid course.

Beginner/Improvers

Training is always available to members new to sailing and members who want to increases their confidence or look at one particular aspect of their sailing. This training is arranged on an individual basis so please ask the club instructors whose names are on the club notice board.

On Social Saturdays which are the last Saturday of the month adhoc training may be available in the afternoons / evenings. Perfect to practice for the Super Series handicap events which are on the last Sunday of the month.
