Sailing Camp & Junior Commodore´s cup - 2006

This years sailing camp was a surprisingly good one due to the almost constant sunshine throughout the week. As usual there were three groups; beginners, intermediates and racers. The beginners had a very thorough week with a range of boats and conditions from sailing a 14ft leader in almost no wind to not being unable to go on the water due to too much wind, and lots of basic theory of course.

The intermediates sailed Optimists most of the time although on some days a few of them used Toppers, and consequently capsizing fairly often. As well as that they did races, tennis ball tag, towing, standing up races, capsize exercises in Toppers and theory.

The racing group also did a large variety with racing on Wednesday and Thursday. They were instructed in the art of pumping, sail trimming, tailgating (in very expensive enterprises), mark rounding, starts, rudderless sailing (for the more advanced racers) and how to have a blast. On Thursday racing Callum, Duncan and Robert were disqualified for being too good which was a tad harsh.

On the Sunday there was the traditional junior commodore´s cup. The majority of the racers and a few of the intermediates entered along with one of the 16 year old instructors who thought she could beat everyone in her laser. She was very wrong. She got knocked out in the first round by Duncan who was only sailing his laser for the third time ever. Finally Sam from the racing group won in his enterprise with his dad crewing, with Duncan right behind him due to a critical mistake. However due to a toppers handicap over a laser Angus, (also from the racing group) beat Duncan on points.

It was a very enjoyable sailing camp and, as always, the instructors and everyone else who gave up their time to help are the main people to thank.
